Computer Skills for the Job Search

Free job search guidance for Pasco County and the Tampa Bay area

The minimum you need

Applying for almost any job now requires you to use a browser, manage an email account, attach a document, fill an online form and create a password you can retrieve. If any of that is uncertain, address it first, because everything else in a job search depends on it.

Email

Create a free account with a professional address: some form of your name, no nicknames, no birth year. Learn to attach files, save drafts, search old messages and check the spam folder, where interview invitations regularly land.

Documents

Learn enough word processing to edit a resume, change fonts, adjust margins and export a PDF. Free office suites do everything a job search needs. Save every version to cloud storage so a broken computer does not end your search.

Spreadsheets

Basic spreadsheet skill is listed on an enormous share of office job postings and takes a weekend to reach a usable level: entering data, sorting, filtering, simple formulas, formatting. It is the highest return skill per hour invested for anyone applying to administrative, clerical or coordinator roles.

Video meetings

Learn to join a meeting from a link, mute and unmute, share a screen and switch the camera. Practice with someone before an interview rather than during one.

Where to learn for free

Public libraries in this region offer free computer classes, one-on-one help and computer and internet access for anyone with a library card. Large free online course platforms cover office software, workplace skills and technical subjects at no cost. Community colleges run short non-credit courses and often have free or low cost options for job seekers. Community organizations run basic computer classes aimed specifically at adults returning to work.

Keyboarding

If typing is slow, free typing practice sites will double your speed in a few weeks of daily practice. Data entry, clerical and customer service roles frequently test it.
